Slothrust – Sex And Candy

Slothrust’s Sex And Candy is a cover of the, then, popular Marcy Playground’s Sex And Candy (It was released in 1997). Slothrust’s interpretation is direct, but with a woman’s vocal touch, plus some bluntness to boot.

“Sex and Candy” was a breakthrough single for Marcy Playground and still is considered to be one of those one hit wonders that helps define the 1990’s pop culture. In hindsight, it’s an honor, to be honest. And we’re sure Marcy Playground thinks so as well.

That’s where bands like Slothrust comes in and covers songs like this, solidifying the stature of such ‘one hit wonders’. It’s a big milestone.

Slothrust, a fab group from Brooklyn, does just that. Keeps to the core of the song, retains its ‘slacker’ feel, but amplifies the tune with some classic Leah low growl.

The point of the cover is of ‘anti-climactic’ fizz. Contrary to the song’s lyrics, which is about the warmth of the ‘climactic fountain of lust’.

It’s a good combo, and we like.

Slothrust has done a whole EP of covers. They’re touring western Europe right now, and swinging back to the States in December.

They’re rep’ed by Danger Bird Records, HQ’ed in Los Angeles.
