Earthquake: how do fault lines work? What causes the tremors?

Earthquakes are a bi-product of sudden seismic shifts from a fault line. A ‘fault’ is a “planar fracture or discontinuity in a volume of rock, across which there has been significant displacement as a result of rock-mass movement”. When mass of rocks suddenly move, an earthquake tremor occurs (just like in the Mexico City earthquake).
