Hippo Campus Shares ‘Passenger’ (Audio / Video).

‘Passenger’ is Hippo Campus communicating their level of confidence, in music construction and lyrical maturation. When confidence is firm, it is an clear path to how the song sounds. In this latest single, there were many opportunities for the band to get pretentious and add 3-4 more pop elements (market tested and effective) where it wasn’t really needed.

But they didn’t. And that is surely because of the clear path of what the song was TO BECOME.

We’d place ‘Passenger’ right in between alt-rock-ballad and indie-rock-pop. There are many examples of these, but to us, HC had done it well, and won us over.

There’s a reason why they are so popular online, with many scores of fans, attending their shows.

The Minneapolis band’s ‘Passenger’ was produced by regular-collaborator BJ Burton (Bon Iver, Sylvan Esso, Francis & The Lights).

“Passenger was written in the winter of 2017 after the first four months of touring on landmark,” says singer/guitarist Jake Luppen. “Lyrically the themes deal with the challenges of growing alongside the person you love. For this song in particular I tried to challenge myself to write a more complex chord progression to sing to. I started off with a TR-8 groove and the rest followed pretty naturally.”

The band consists of: Jake Luppen, Whistler Allen, Zach Sutton, and Nathan Stocker.

Kudos, guys. Kudos.

See them on tour somewhere near you.
