Kid Koala (Eric San) will drop on April 27th, the soundtrack album for Floor Kids video game. The set is a 42-track project featuring 71 minutes of original instrumental hip-hop and break music.
‘Five Spot Stomp’ (the single) is a classic homage to the hip-hop philosophy with full funk and jazz influences (real upright bass notes, we presume) and fun orientation.
“‘Five Spot Stomp’ is a track from a location called The Corner in the video game. JonJon showed me a concept sketch he had done of this location, complete with a crowd of kids standing around cheering on the battle. My goal was to make a track that would fit the visuals he had created. I kept the rhythm target hits relatively simple since it’s still in the early part (level 2) of the game.”
“Tone-wise, it was fun to make a track that nodded to the beats I grew up listening to when I was in high school, the ones built around a lost loop of an old jazz club jam. I played some upright bass and drums and recorded them with an old RCA ribbon microphone. I then re-sampled all the layers into this very strange Vestax 10 bit sampler to get that crunchy sound, and added a few scratches here and there. Those are my daughters doing the countdowns in the track. We had a lot of fun jumpin’ around in the studio that day!”
The video game started its life from animator & bboy JonJon plus, Kid Koala. The game is about ‘breaking’, the artform. It tries its best to add some levels in the art and dance, by narrating a journey through 70’s funk, 80’s 808s, 90’s 12bit, and 00’s synth.
Kid Koala has also announced the Vinyl Vaudeville: Floor Kids Edition tour, a special expanded version of his road-tested variety show, including a traveling arcade that will hit the road on April 26th (full date listing below).
You might not believe it, but we at CHF, do love old school Hip-Hop. And when combining with video games and ‘breaking’, the review had to be written.
Floor Kids video game is available now on Nintendo Switch in 37 countries.
