Indie-folk/soul/r&b artist, JENNAH BELL, is simply beautiful and remarkable. And in her single ‘Chapter 3: The Hatchet’, the simple delivery of her Spring breeze vocals, tailors to have you fall in love. Off of her debut full-length LP ‘Anchors & Elephants, she’s captured the embers of the song perfectly.
Drawing on her influences in folk, soul, r&b, rock, and pop, the singer-songwriter’s effervescently melancholic single is just too gorgeous for anyone to pass up. Oakland native, long time Brooklyn resident, and now Los Angeles based artist sings her heart out in that under-stated majesty, flirting and engaging with her words and her musical frame of mind.
Obsession of the Day!
She has worked with Russell Elovado (D’Angelo, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Common) and productions from Michael Haziza and James Poyser of The Roots (who’s also toured and performed with Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin and written and produced songs for Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Mariah Carey and Common), to offer us the gold in her songs.
Her mysterious, sweet, tangible, unattainable lyrics are wrapped with her angelic and heart obliterating-ly textural vocals. And we want to emphasize her songwriting prowess, a powerful tool in her musical arsenal, which keeps you anchored in one place – inspired in awe, and drooling with the warm and fuzzy.
Jennah burns bright as always, continuing in depth and versatility, her father Ronnie Bell and uncle Robert “Kool’ Bell demonstrated for the world through their enormous project, KOOL AND THE GANG.
As we’d mentioned Jennah is special and has always been. Every song in the new album ‘Anchors & Elephants’ is worth your time, to absorb and to admire. Awash with term so of “heartbreak, insecurity, vices, loss of innocence, brutal winters and the pains and pleasures of dancing through it in your 20s”, it is a beauty apart from all else.
It’s in the words.
“I’d say, that in its entirety, this is how I got to know myself,” said Jennah of the album. “And I hope that it comes across this way—that I’m a living, breathing, dynamic person who loves lots of things. And it seems simple enough, but I feel like—especially as a black woman — a lot of the commentary on the styles I choose or don’t choose, has a lot to do with what other people expect of me.”
For us with her single ‘Chapter 3: The Hatchet’, ‘Song Of The Day!’ becomes our ‘Obsession Of The Day!’
Beautiful and remarkable, indeed.
We’re in love, and you should be too.
On February 27th, join her for her album launch party at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall w/ Special Guest Elliott Skinner.
