Dark and twisted. Abrupt and virtual. The shades of gray is a layer underneath the colors of primary concerns. ONE ELEVEN takes you away with ‘Mai Mai’ in a trip under the stars, with that kind of sentimentality – in contrast and oddity.
And it’s fabulous.
Fyah and Ollie make up this sonically attractive project and the duo from London is draped in mystery, as the sultry vocals of Fyah disseminates the truth, in lo-fi arrangements and hypnotic musical framing.
‘Mai Mai’ is a song of lyrics that are poetic, rhythmic, textual, and ominous. With all of the weight of a thousand-stars, the ‘gothic’ vibe of this charming single enhances as it slowly drones you in to an affair of the heart. A paramour in beauty, the song glances at the sight of impending doom, but settles in with utter comfort, as the dreamlike shimmer casts you into neverland.
Surprisingly enough, you are fine with that.
The duo said of the inspiration for the song: “A riff we were playing at the time triggered something – weaving together the way we were feeling with fantasy. It’s about ghosts, reflective and dreamlike, the bitter sweet nature of memory.”
Directed by photographic artist and director Ivar Wigan (director of ‘Real Bad Gal’ by Vybz Kartel), the duo were taken to the Isle Of Skye where the filming took place. The flickering glitches of the audio matches with the visuals, as the imagery seamlessly continue the narration.
This dynamic offering is a tantalizing tease.
As the days go by, we hope to hear more and more of this understated project, that, so far, has revealed so much gumption and vision.
See ONE ELEVEN live at The Bermondsey Social Club in London on September 11th.
