Delightful from the start, JORDAN MACKAMPA’s single ‘What Am I’ can be an anthem and cheerleader for all us going through that vibe of life and its challenges. Uncertainty is soaked in the petrol of hinted dangers. A place of wellness, is just at the corner of that long winding road.
Will it ever get here for me? Will it ever make it better? Am I not worthy of such small, but significant happiness?
Jordan stated on the track: “‘What Am I’ is a modern take on Marvin Gaye’s classic ‘What’s Going On’, highlighting the state of the world right now, from multiple wars in different territories; how the earth is dying, to the border control problem & how it’s been dealt with. It’s a lot of ‘hopes and prayers’, changing of display pictures to blue, but all trickling down to a stop soon after, as it’s no longer in the forefront of the media.”
“I wrote this song in the mindset of how I need to do more but don’t know how because I am only one man, trying his best to make change within the means available.”
Jordan’s supple and powerful juxtapositions in his vocal delivery, is the friend and confidant you’d been awaiting. From horns, to percussions, and of the orchestral strings and back up singing, the funk & groove of this gentle single ‘What Am I’ is a beautiful example of complexity, delivered in gloriously simple attitude.
You. Us. All of the listeners can cope and listen and hope.
The London based artist is glorious to listen to in ‘What Am I’. Inspired by his mother’s love of the great soul singers, Jordan captures that timeless vocal studies and enhances it with his own blend of pop and soul.
