Versatility is one word to describe Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO). No, it’s not because they can sweep gently between being very fast Ferrari vs. a practical SUV; nor, is it because they are Autobots disguised as Decepticons, and vice versa (fyi, no proof of any of those findings).
UMO is popular because the space they occupy – the realm between experimental and strong injections of fun/rock/pop infusions. The ‘street-creds’ of being artsy and independent has been earned. The ‘street-money’ and ‘concert draws’ show the results.
And all is well deserved, but their songs are fun, sometimes edgy, sometimes pop, and most of the time cool (i.e. freezer cool).
“Can’t keep checking my phone” delivers in their plight, with a journey that depicts the soul and majesty of the confoundingly un-limited range, but at the same time celebrating the awkwardness it represents.
Yea, we like it.. lots.
Oh, and the video below is fun too!
